That Time I Chatted with Camille Dundas
On this inspiring episode of Teeter Talks, I’m joined by the incredible Camille Dundas, one of Canada’s leading voices in racial equity and inclusion. Camille’s work spans from empowering global companies like Google and KPMG Financial to shaping the future of anti-racism education across Canada. As the founder and Principal Educator at The IDEA Practice, Camille is driving change by delivering Canada’s first corporate micro-credential in diversity, equity, and inclusion through Dalhousie University. But her leadership doesn’t stop there. As Editor-in-Chief of ByBlacks.com, she has led her team to win multiple national awards, all while amplifying the voices of Canada’s Black community. Named one of the Top 100 Black Canadian Accomplished Women in 2022, Camille’s leadership is a testament to the power of purpose-driven work. Her passion for creating lasting change and fostering a culture of inclusion inspires leaders to step up, speak out, and make a real difference. This conversation is a deep dive into the transformative power of leadership, allyship, and the ongoing journey toward racial equity.
Join us as we dive into these topics:
- The difference between equity and equality, using real-life examples to illustrate the importance of racial equity in creating fair opportunities for all.
- Reflecting on what it truly means to live out allyship, emphasising the shift from merely talking about it to actively embodying it in everyday life through both reflection and intentional action.
- The concept of privilege, reframing it as a superpower—something that can be recognised, understood, and used for good to drive positive change.
- Discussing the lived experience of being a diversity hire, exploring how assumptions can impact individuals and organizations, and how these situations can perpetuate inequity.
- Camille’s thoughts on navigating tough conversations with children around racism.
- Explaining micro-credentials, highlighting Dalhousie University’s new course in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how these courses provide working professionals with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge and advance in their careers.
- Camille’s perspective on leadership, reflecting on the importance of knowing when to step forward and when to step back, allowing others to rise alongside you.
It was a true honour to have this conversation with Camille. The work she’s doing to foster racial equity and inclusion is powerful and necessary, and her leadership is a true inspiration. Conversations like these can be challenging, but they’re essential as we work together to create a more just and equitable world for everyone.
